VITALISM

Western Civilization's Science and Philosophy of the Life Force

What Is Vitalism?

Vitalism is Western civilization's science and philosophy of the life force in living beings, the principle through which life, health, symptoms, what is called disease, and healing are understood as expressions of the lawful activity of nature. It studies the intelligence by which a living being organizes and maintains itself, grows and reproduces, adapts and defends, conserves and repairs, degenerates and restores, together with the conditions that build, diminish, and restore vitality.

The vital life force is life itself, present in the delightful flight of a butterfly and clearly absent from its body after death. Across the history of healing, this living principle has been central to the understanding of health and recovery. Hippocrates called it physis, the self-directing nature of the living being. Across the centuries it appeared under many names, including anima, pneuma, archeus, spiritus, and vis medicatrix naturae, the healing power of nature.

Chinese medicine names the Vital Life Force Chi, and Ayurveda names it Prana. Both traditions place it at the center of health and healing. It was likewise foundational to the Western healing tradition until the beginning of the twentieth century, when major advances in diagnostics, drugs, and surgery supplanted its central role. Diagnosis and treatment became increasingly deductive and reductive, and the lawful activity of the whole living being receded from view.

Addressing the present epidemic of degenerative disease requires the restoration of the vital life force to the center of the art and science of healing. Its proper name is Vita, the Latin word for life. The same root is present in vitality, vital signs, and vitamin. Vita is the Western name for the life force known as Chi in Chinese medicine and Prana in Ayurveda.

Natural Law
Nature cannot violate the laws of nature.
Axiom of Natural Law

The vital life force acts according to natural law. The Living Person is part of nature and subject to its laws. Growth, adaptation, defense, degeneration, symptoms, and healing all follow those laws.

The Unified Laws begin from this axiom, and every account of health, symptoms, and disease is tested against it. Where an explanation requires nature to have acted without order, against life, or against its own laws, the error lies in the explanation and not in nature.

“Science becomes exact science only when the underlying laws which correlate and unify its scattered facts and theories have been discovered.”

Henry Lindlahr, M.D., pioneer of Naturopathy, Nature Cure (1913)

The Seven Unified Laws of Vitalism

The Natural-Law Foundation of 21st Century Vitalism

The Unified Laws of Vitalism reveal that what has been called disease is the intentional and lawful activity of nature misinterpreted as pathology, and identify the lawful pathways through which symptoms arise and are resolved. They give the science of health a single foundation.

The seven Laws were unearthed by Joseph Dunkley from the work and writings of physicians, philosophers, naturopaths, hygienists, healers, and investigators across millennia, from Hippocrates through Hahnemann, Jennings, Trall, Still, Palmer, Tilden, Lindlahr, Shelton, Rolf, Hamer, and others. They worked within different traditions and vocabularies, and some of the final pieces were not articulated until as recently as 1987. He gathered their scattered facts into a unified whole, and followed the relationships among their discoveries until the underlying order became visible.

Historical Vitalism developed the vitality pathway, German New Medicine developed the trauma pathway, and modern medicine developed emergency care and physiological verification. The Unified Laws bring the three into one science of health.

I

The Law of the Vital Life Force, Vita

All living beings are animated by the vital life force, Vita, the energetic and divinely intelligent principle that organizes form and governs all functions of growth, reproduction, adaptation, degeneration, and restoration. This force, the vis medicatrix naturae, operates lawfully from within and is inherent to life itself. At the biological level, vitality is expressed through mitochondrial function, where the cell generates the energy required for life. All laws of Vitalism are discerned through observing the actions of this vital life force in living beings.

“The body's nature [physis/vita] is the physician in disease. Nature finds the way for herself, not from thought. ... Without instruction, Nature does what is needed.”

Hippocrates, Epidemics VI.5.1 (c. 400 BC)

VII

The Law of Trauma Healing Sequences

Symptoms arise through four pathways, and healing proceeds through two. The innumerable conditions called disease all fall within those four, and their resolution within those two.

The Unified Laws are natural laws, and so they can be seen by careful observation of nature. Science adds to that observation by revealing mechanisms, measuring processes, and seeing into the cell, the nervous system, and the mitochondria. The Law remains prior to the instrument that measures it and to the method through which it is applied. Nature operates by the Laws, the vitalist discerns them from her actions, and science confirms how they operate. Applied Vitalism applies that science to the health and healing of the person through the healing arts.

Vitalism embraces diagnosis, and treatment when necessary. Where a condition threatens life or outruns the body's reserve, decisive medical intervention is part of the vitalist path, and to refuse proven care out of ideology fails the very life Vitalism exists to serve.

Steward of the Unified Laws

The laws of nature do not change. What changes is the clarity with which they are seen and the precision with which they are stated. Where closer observation shows that a law has been expressed imperfectly, the statement must be corrected. The Institute is entrusted with their continuing study, articulation, and refinement.

The Institute of Vitalism works to restore the vital life force, Vita, to the center of Western medicine and to bring the valid knowledge of modern and alternative medicine into a unified science under the natural laws that govern all living beings. It gathers and develops modern research, clinical observation, and discoveries that strengthen vitality, restore the conditions of health, and support the lawful processes of healing.

The Institute of Vitalism was founded in 2026 by Joseph Dunkley, author of The Unified Laws of Vitalism, and is being established as a nonprofit foundation, the home of 21st Century Vitalism.

The Seven Pillars

The Architecture of the Institute

The Institute organizes its inquiry into seven Pillars. Each takes one domain and studies it under the Unified Laws.

The Seven Pillars of the Institute of Vitalism
I

Vital Strength

Pioneers the means by which Vita builds and restores the body, raising muscle, bone, fascia, posture, and working capacity in those who have never been fit, those rebuilding after injury, illness, or long convalescence, and those who take physical discipline as a path of self-mastery. Its horizon is longevity.

II

The Vital Table

Researches how nourishment raises vitality and restores it to those who have lost it, advancing ketogenic and metabolic nutrition, therapeutic fasting and therapeutic meals, water, restorative broths and elixirs, and the sourcing, cooking, hospitality, and table culture through which vitality is shared. Its aim is to return nourishment to the center of medicine.

III

Metabolic Vitality

Researches Vita at its source in the mitochondria of the cell, pioneering the recovery of cellular energy, metabolic reserve, and biological renewal through mitochondrial science, therapeutic nutraceuticals, and the diagnostics and imaging that make devitalization and restoration visible. Works toward the reversal of aging and degeneration, and evaluates emerging regenerative technologies with discipline before adoption.

IV

Vital Presence & Embodiment

Develops the disciplines by which the mind is settled, the body inhabited, the structure restored, and character formed, advancing meditation and self-observation, breath, structural integration of fascia and posture, and the temperament, emotional steadiness, and relational harmony to which Vita answers.

V

Vital Response

Takes up the art and science of trauma resolution, investigating shock and conflict, the genesis of symptoms, the relationships among psyche, brain, and organ, healing sequences, relapse, somatic resolution, and the lawful responses through which Vita brings an overwhelming experience to completion rather than leaving it to be carried. The Institute holds trauma among the great unsolved problems of medicine, and intends its healing to become a reliable art.

VI

Vital Care

Establishes the care that protects vitality while healing proceeds on its own terms, through illness, convalescence, childbirth, rehabilitation, recovery after medical intervention, serious disease, aging, and every period of diminished reserve. Its concerns are vitalistic nursing, rest and nourishment, touch and human presence, the care of the dying, and the making of environments marked by calm, dignity, rhythm, and warmth.

VII

Applied Vitalism

Develops Applied Vitalism, the application of Vitalism to the health and healing of the person through its many healing arts. Here the Institute advances Vitalistic Diagnosis; develops case mapping, practitioner reasoning, education, and clinical formation; and publishes the research, cases, and argument of the field through the Journal of the Institute of Vitalism.

The work extends to the founding of the Valeo Center for Applied Vitalism and to the model by which other practices, clinics, and healing centers may order themselves by natural law. Its aim is to bring the healing arts into a coherent relationship with one another under the Unified Laws while each remains rooted in its own domain.

The Application of Vitalism

Applied Vitalism is the application of Vitalism, the Western healing tradition, to the health and healing of the person. It encompasses the many healing arts, therapies, and practices that raise vitality, remove obstructions, or heal the psyche, working in alignment with the healing power of nature and the intelligence of the body. The Unified Laws of Vitalism are its scientific foundation, revealing the reach of each healing art and its place within the whole of health and healing.

Vitalism has long been practiced in pieces, each healing art holding part of it. What Western healing has lost is the shared recognition of its unifying tradition, and what it has lacked is a natural-law structure showing how its many healing arts belong together. With its laws now stated as one body in the Unified Laws of Vitalism, those pieces can be seen and practiced as one field.

A healing method is vitalistic when it removes what obstructs life or establishes the conditions life requires, working in alignment with the intelligence of the body. That test applies to every kind of care, whatever its form, and it does not require the practitioner to have studied Vitalism. A therapy can be vitalistic in its action long before its practitioner has a conscious understanding of Vitalism.

Each healing art has a particular domain, which gives it both its depth and its boundary. The Unified Laws show the aspect of life upon which it acts, the healing pathway it serves, and what lies beyond its reach, and so they show when the next work belongs to another healing art.

International Society of Applied Vitalism

The Community of the Field

The Institute hosts the International Society of Applied Vitalism (ISAV), bringing vitalistic practitioners, researchers, students, and health seekers into a common field of inquiry, exchange, and fellowship. Through the Society, research, discoveries, clinical experience, and observations are gathered and examined. This shared work deepens the understanding of natural law, brings greater precision to the statement of the Unified Laws of Vitalism, and advances their application throughout the healing arts.

The Institute and the Society host international conferences, lectures, and invited speakers, where practitioners and researchers present their work, examine new discoveries, and share clinical experience.

The Journal of the Institute of Vitalism publishes the research, case studies, and discoveries of the field, so that practice can improve, the principles and methods of Vital Care can be worked out, and therapies can be evaluated and refined.

Through this work, the Institute serves as the central forum for the advancement of Applied Vitalism and for the restoration of Vitalism as a living science within Western medicine.

The Great Work

A Generational Scientific Undertaking

Through the measured understanding and application of these Laws, the way is opened toward the abolition of disease as a cause of human mortality. This is the Great Work for which the Institute of Vitalism is founded.

The Great Work requires preserving and studying the Western vitalist tradition, continuing to discover natural law, incorporating valid advances in modern health science, and building a science able to prevent degeneration, restore vitality, and extend healthy human life.
